Key Takeaways
- This table covers 53 African countries in the same dataset that powers IQ Career Lab's country pages.
- Mauritius has the highest estimate in this dataset at 92, but source quality and source year vary substantially across countries.
- The regional mean is not an estimate of any individual person's intelligence.
- Country-level cognitive scores are strongly affected by education, nutrition, health, sampling and test conditions.
- Every country name in the table opens a dedicated profile with its source, education data and methodological notes.

These are country-level estimates from the dataset that powers IQ Career Lab's country profiles. Source methods and years vary by country. The lowest estimate in this regional table is Guinea-Bissau at 67. National averages should not be used to infer the ability of an individual person.
A country ranking is most useful as a navigation layer, not as a verdict. Click any country above to open the full profile and inspect the source behind its estimate.

Why African country estimates need extra caution
Africa is the region where historical national-IQ datasets have drawn some of their strongest methodological criticism. Many countries have not had large, nationally representative adult IQ samples. Older compilations sometimes relied on narrow school samples, studies from a single city, or estimates borrowed from neighboring countries.
That matters because a national average can move dramatically when the sample changes. School attendance, childhood disease burden, nutrition, language of testing and familiarity with standardized tests all influence measured performance. A result collected from one subgroup cannot automatically stand in for an entire country.
Our broader guide to average IQ by country explains the main global datasets and why apparently precise rankings should be treated as estimates rather than immutable national traits.
What the ranking does and does not tell you
The table can answer a narrow question: what values are currently attached to African countries in our source-backed dataset?
It cannot tell you that one nationality is inherently more intelligent than another. It cannot predict the ability of a person from Nigeria, Ethiopia, Somalia, South Africa or any other country. Within-country variation is far larger than the difference between many neighboring national estimates.
This distinction is especially important because the countries driving search interest are often not the ones with the cleanest measurement history. If you arrived here after searching for the average IQ in Nigeria, South Africa, Ethiopia or Somalia, use the country page to inspect the exact source rather than relying only on the regional rank.
Why environment matters
Measured cognitive performance changes when conditions change. Education access, early-childhood nutrition, iodine status, infectious disease exposure and socioeconomic conditions all affect test performance at population scale. This is one reason country rankings can shift over generations without any plausible genetic explanation.
The Flynn Effect is the clearest reminder that population test scores are not fixed. When living and educational conditions change, measured scores can change too.
How to compare countries responsibly
For a useful comparison, look at more than the headline IQ estimate. Each IQ Career Lab country profile also shows literacy, GDP per capita, Human Development Index, mean years of schooling and education spending. Those variables provide context for why measured performance may differ.
If you are comparing two countries, open both profiles and check whether their IQ values come from the same source family and similar years. A one-point difference between countries measured in different studies is not a meaningful league-table victory.
