Key Takeaways
- This table covers 47 Asian countries in the current IQ Career Lab dataset.
- Singapore is the highest estimate in our dataset at 108, followed by a group including China, Japan and South Korea.
- The table is generated from the same source data used on each individual country page.
- PISA performance and national IQ estimates are related concepts, but they are not interchangeable measurements.
- Country averages describe populations in datasets, not the ability of individual people.

These are country-level estimates from the dataset that powers IQ Career Lab's country profiles. Source methods and years vary by country. The lowest estimate in this regional table is Timor-Leste at 78. National averages should not be used to infer the ability of an individual person.
Because every country row links to its profile, you can move from the regional overview to the exact source and contextual statistics behind the number.

Why East Asia dominates many IQ ranking pages
Search results for "highest IQ countries" frequently feature Singapore, Japan, South Korea and China near the top. That pattern appears in our dataset as well. These countries also have highly developed education systems and strong performance on international academic assessments.
That does not make IQ and school achievement the same thing. PISA measures learned competencies among students. IQ tests aim to measure broader cognitive abilities using standardized norms. The two can correlate at population level while still answering different questions.
This distinction becomes important for countries such as Vietnam, where educational achievement data has sometimes looked stronger than older national-IQ estimates would predict. When two measurement systems disagree, the disagreement is information rather than a reason to hide one of them.
Asia is not one cognitive or educational system
A regional mean compresses enormous variation. Singapore is a small, wealthy city-state. India contains more than a billion people across very different educational environments. Gulf states, Central Asian republics, East Asian economies and lower-income South Asian countries should not be treated as one homogeneous population simply because they share a continent label.
If your interest is country-specific, jump directly to profiles such as India, Japan, China, South Korea, Singapore or Nepal.
How much confidence should you place in the differences?
Large differences deserve investigation. Tiny differences often do not. A country shown at 101 and another at 102 may have overlapping uncertainty once sampling, test choice and year are considered.
The sensible interpretation is therefore banded rather than absolute: look for broad regional patterns, then inspect the individual country methodology. Our guide to standard deviation in intelligence testing explains why even individual scores should not be over-read point by point.
What explains population-level differences?
Education, nutrition, health, urbanization, test familiarity and socioeconomic development all contribute to measured cognitive outcomes. They also change over time. That makes country IQ rankings snapshots of available evidence, not permanent labels.
